​FIFA takes action on NFF crisis after Ibrahim Gusau’s resignation

​World football governing body FIFA is already making moves following the resignation of Ibrahim Gusau from his position as president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Soccernet.ng reports.

​Last week, the NFF boss held a press conference to announce his exit. This came in the aftermath of the Super Falcons' failure to advance beyond the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations and the poor performances of the other national teams.

​Although Gusau said that his resignation was a personal decision, it is believed that he may have been told to step down by the federal government.

​If this proves to be true, it could attract heavy sanctions for Nigerian football, including a possible ban by FIFA.

​Reports now indicate that FIFA has already begun taking steps regarding the situation.

​FIFA's Actions Following the NFF Crisis

​Following the resignation of Ibrahim Gusau and members of the NFF board, there is currently no sitting or acting president at the Glass House.

However, an interim committee has been set up, led by Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme as interim General Secretary. He is assisted by Dr. Ademola Olajire, who is serving as interim Deputy General Secretary.

​According to Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, FIFA is already aware of the situation within the NFF, though punitive action is not the immediate focus.

​Obayiuwana reported that FIFA is in communication with the National Sports Commission as it assesses and plans for the future governance of Nigerian football.

​As of now, several names have emerged as potential contenders for the NFF presidency. Figures such as Michael Emenalo and Remo Stars owner Kunle Soname have been touted to take over at the Glass House, with the leadership situation expected to be resolved in the coming days.
