Minister of Sports, John Enoh, has outlined a timeline for the announcement of the new head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, as reported by Soccernet.ng.
The coaching position for the Super Eagles has been vacant since Jose Peseiro’s contract expired, prompting the Nigeria Football Federation to carefully consider the next candidate for the role.
However, the prolonged selection process has raised concerns within the Nigerian football community, especially with the Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic scheduled for June.
Enoh addressed these concerns during an interview on Channels TV, providing clarity on the timeline for the new coach’s appointment, given the significance of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
“What I can assure is the senior national team will have a new coach in the next one week or at most two weeks,” stated the sports minister. “The campaign for the next World Cup has started and we didn’t start well, it was a shaky one and therefore there’s a lot of mileage to cover,”
Highlighting the importance of Nigeria’s participation in the upcoming World Cup, Enoh emphasized the NFF’s commitment to avoiding past mistakes and ensuring the team’s success on the global stage.
“We didn’t qualify for the last World Cup and can’t afford not to be at the next edition.
“The NFF know what Nigeria lost not being at the last World Cup and are doing everything not to repeat same mistake that will lead to the same disappointment.” he added.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Emmanuel Amuneke, Domenec Torrent, and Antonio Conceicao have emerged as the final three candidates for the Super Eagles coaching position.
In the coming weeks, it is expected that one of these coaches, potentially including a local candidate, will be officially announced as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
