Nigeria vs Mali: George Finidi’s three biggest dilemmas ahead of Super Eagles tie with Les Aigles

The clash between Nigeria and Mali at the Grande Stade de Marrakech today sets the stage for an intense showdown in the second of their two friendlies this March, Soccernet.ng reports.

Fresh off a commendable 2-1 victory against Ghana, the Super Eagles will look to replicate their success against Mali.

However, Les Aigles pose a formidable challenge, having secured a friendly win against Mauritania just days ago.

Nigeria's coach, George Finidi, is eager to secure a second consecutive win but faces three significant dilemmas that could impact his ambitions.

Goalkeeping dilemma: Start Uzoho or Nwabali?

The first quandary plaguing Finidi is the choice between goalkeeping stalwarts Francis Uzoho and Stanley Nwabali.

While Nwabali recently impressed with another commendable performance against Ghana, guiding Nigeria to victory, the looming question remains: should Finidi afford Uzoho another opportunity to prove his mettle?

As the undisputed number-one goalkeeper for the Super Eagles, Nwabali's reliability is unquestionable.

However, with the need for contingency planning in mind, Finidi might be inclined to grant Uzoho a chance to reclaim his position, simultaneously instilling confidence in the Cyprus-based shot-stopper.

Nonetheless, with the imperative of clinching a win against Mali looming large, Finidi may ultimately opt for the tried and tested Nwabali to guard the posts.

Defensive dilemma: Five-man defence or four?

Compounding Finidi's woes is the defensive conundrum facing the Super Eagles.

A slew of injuries and setbacks have left the defensive lineup in disarray, with invited defenders such as Calvin Bassey, Gabriel Osho, and Tyronne Ebuehi sidelined.

With Kenneth Omeruo also nursing a knock, Finidi finds himself with a meager six fully fit defenders at his disposal for the impending clash.

The question arises: should Finidi persist with a five-man defensive setup, risking a depleted bench, or opt for a more conservative four-man formation to bolster defensive solidity against Mali's potent attacking threat?

A pivotal decision awaits Finidi as he navigates through the tactical labyrinth in search of defensive resilience.

Attacking dilemma: Retain Iheanacho-Dessers or launch Lookman-Sadiq?

Lastly, Finidi grapples with the dilemma of striking the right balance in the attacking department.

The striking duo of Cyriel Dessers and Kelechi Iheanacho dazzled against Ghana, exhibiting an impressive synergy that yielded numerous scoring opportunities.

Yet, with the promise of squad rotation looming, the likes of Umar Sadiq and Ademola Lookman eagerly await their chance to shine. Lookman's recent goal-scoring exploits further complicate Finidi's selection dilemma.

Should Finidi adhere to his winning formula with Iheanacho and Dessers or bench them both for Sadiq and Lookman?

The Enyimba FC coach could also opt for a tactical overhaul, potentially reverting to a 4-3-3 formation to accommodate the pace and flair of Nathan Tella and Moses Simon.

As the Super Eagles brace for a showdown against Mali, George Finidi navigates these dilemmas, hopefully with precision, as he aims to lead his team to another triumphant display on the international stage.

Finding George is a good coach. Having represented Club and Country at the highest level (Ajax, Ipswich, Betis, Super Eagles) playing in the La Liga, Eredivise, Premiership, and World Cup means he has all the experience to lead and manage the national team.
Ofcourse he will male mistakes but the truth is he will need a few years to grow into the role thus he should be given 1000% support by the NFF and all Nigerians.

    FINIDI is the man
