William Troost-Ekong scored the only goal that clinched all three points for the Super Eagles in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stage match against Cote d’Ivoire
Super Eagles defender William Troost Ekong has provided insights into his injury status ahead of the much-anticipated Africa Cup of Nations 2023 quarterfinal against Angola, Soccernet.ng reports.
The PAOK defender, who missed the clash against Guinea-Bissau due to being declared unfit after an impactful performance against Côte d’Ivoire, played the full 90 minutes against Cameroon.
However, concerns arose when he was spotted not training with the rest of the team in Nigeria’s first training session ahead of the Angola clash.
In a brief interview witnessed by Soccernet.ng, Ekong acknowledged his ongoing struggle with injuries since the Ivory Coast game, but assured fans that he would be available if selected.
“I’ve been struggling with injuries since the Ivory Coast game, so I’m trying to manage myself, but I will be ready to play on Friday if the coach selects me.
“We are trying to improve on every game and analyse our game, and we will also analyse Angola.” he said.
Against Guinea-Bissau, Kenneth Omeruo stepped in for Ekong and played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s victory against the Djurtus.
Omeruo is expected to replace the vice-captain once more, potentially taking on the captain’s role in Troost Ekong’s absence as the Super Eagles seek a significant win against Angola.
The status of Ekong’s injury remains a key point of interest as Nigerian football fans await updates and the official lineup for the quarterfinal clash.
But, Jose Peseiro is expected to make an official confirmation on if the former Salernitana player will be fully fit for selection against Angola
