The Super Eagles striker is the Foxes’ joint-leading goal scorer and it could be difficult convincing the club to let him leave midway through the campaign. Fener could have a secret strategy, though
Fenerbahçe are eyeing Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho as their number one transfer target in January, Soccernet.ng reports.
Iheanacho has led Leicester City’s promotion charge term, netting five goals in 16 Championship games – no other Leicester player has scored more.
However, Iheanacho’s contract will expire at the end of the season, and with the 27-year-old striker yet to finalise a new contract with the Foxes, it has sparked keen interest from the Yellow-Navy Blue team.
According to Fanatik (via 90mins), the uncertainty surrounding Iheanacho’s future has opened the door for Fenerbahce to begin negotiations and engineer the Nigerian star’s move to Turkey.
One other notable factor that could potentially enhance Fenerbahçe’s position in the pursuit of Iheanacho is the connection with the striker’s management company, ROGON.
The company reportedly has primary affiliations with Fenerbahçe’s president, Ali Koç. The existing positive relations with ROGON could be pivotal in facilitating the transfer.
Iheanacho’s market value hovers around 18 million Euros, but Fener can get a deal done for less than that due to his expiring contract.
Nevertheless, convincing Leicester, a club determined to secure a return to the Premier League, will pose its own challenges.
Iheanacho’s track record in English football speaks volumes.
The Super Eagles striker has registered 61 goals and 35 assists in 224 matches for Leicester City. Before donning the Foxes jersey, his stint at Manchester City yielded 21 goals and eight assists in 64 games.
