The Nigeria international is Il Partenopei’s best player and the most valuable player in Serie A
Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has revealed why Victor Osimhen has been unhappy at Napoli this term, Soccernet.ng reports.
Osimhen achieved the greatest feat in his club career last season when he guided Napoli to their first Scudetto title in over thirty years.
The Nigeria international scored goals for fun in the league and the Champions League, as he eventually finished as the first African to win the Serie A top scorer award.
At the peak of his popularity in the summer, several reports linked him with multimillion-euro moves away from Napoli, with some of Eutope’s biggest clubs interested in his services.
Osimhen, however, stayed in Naples after Napoli reportedly rejected €100 million and more from PSG and Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal.
While the transfer rumours raged on, Napoli were desperate to get Osimhen to sign a new contract extension. Despite reports to the contrary, the former Lille forward is yet to commit to a new deal with the Italian champions.
Osimhen, however, shrugged off the drama in the summer and started the season in blazing form as he netted six goals in his first eight Serie A games.
But the controversies have been biting hard at his heels, especially when he was the subject of an unprovoked social media attack from his own club, Napoli.
To make matters worse, the 24-year-old striker suffered an injury while on international duty for Nigeria and has not played for Napoli since scoring against Fiorentina on October 8.
Peseiro is convinced that all these factors have contributed to Osimhen’s sadness in recent weeks.
“He is not happy, because obviously he had an injury, which is not good news for us, for Napoli, and for the Italian championship,” Peseiro told TV Play via Tutto Napoli.
“They have not been simple weeks, the rumours about the signed contract, the transfer market issues, and the issue of the TikTok video, especially for an important player like him.
“Now, however, I know that he has a great desire to return to the pitch as soon as possible.”
Osimhen has been away from Napoli over the last few days as he had to address some personal issues in Nigeria.
The Super Eagles striker is expected back in Naples in the next few hours, but he will not be involved in Napoli’s Champions League clash with Union Berlin on Wednesday.
