Ajax were very close to securing all three points, but Almere City had other plans
Nigerian forward Chuba Akpom got off the bench to score for Ajax in their painful 2-2 draw at Almere City in the Dutch Eredivisie, Soccernet reports.
Ajax returned to Eredivisie action with a game against Almere City at the Yanmar Stadion. Akpom had been in fine form recently, scoring in his last two league games. However, coach Van’t Schip decided to start him from the bench for the game at Almere.
The first half ended goalless, despite both teams registering two shots on target each. However, the fixture sparked to life in the second half, with Almere City scoring in the 67th minute courtesy of Jochem Ritmeester Van de Kamp.
Immediately after Almere City scored, Schip introduced Akpom into the game, and just one minute in, he scored to level the scoring.
According to Opta, Akpom’s goal ensured that he became the first player in Ajax player to score as a substitute in three consecutive Eredivisie games.
Benjamin Tahirovic scored the second goal for Ajax in the 82nd minute to give them the lead for the first time.
Unfortunately for Godenzonen, a stoppage-time striker from Thomas Robinet ensured that the spoils were shared between both teams.
It ended 2-2 at Almere, and Akpom now has four goals in the Eredivisie this season. He would hope that his performances win him a place in the starting eleven after the international break.
