The Nigeria international is a free agent and can still join any club of his choice outside the official transfer window
Super Eagles midfielder Peter Oghenekaro Etebo has emerged as a transfer target for Greek club PAE Panaitolikos, Soccernet.ng reports.
Etebo is presently without a club after he parted ways with Stoke City over the summer.
The Nigerian midfield dynamo spent the entire 2022-2023 season on loan at Aris Saloniki, where he impressed, featuring in 28 games.
Etebo’s name had recently surfaced in transfer discussions involving Gaziantep, a club that recently welcomed his former Aris teammate, Cameroonian defender Nicolas Nkulu, to their roster.
However, information from SDNA reveals that Etebo was on the verge of joining Panaitolikos rather than heading to Turkey.
Advanced negotiations with the Agrinio-based team, who appear keen on bolstering their midfield, seemed promising until a surprising turn of events.
According to Agriniara, an unnamed Bulgarian club has unexpectedly entered the picture, throwing a curveball into Panaitolikos’ chances of signing Etebo.
It appears that this Bulgarian outfit has gained favour in the eyes of the Nigerian midfielder, introducing an element of uncertainty into the transfer saga.
The situation remains fluid as Etebo evaluates his options.
Etebo is one of Nigeria’s most experienced midfielders, having emerged as a hot prospect for Warri Wolves in the Nigerian league.
The 27-year-old arrived in Europe in 2016 after signing for Portuguese side Feirense.
He has since played for clubs in Spain, Turkey, England and Greece.
