Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has shed light on the looming question of who will lead the Nigerian national football team for their critical 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe, Soccernet.ng reports.
The uncertainty surrounding the head coach position has been a topic of discussion over the past few months.
Back in June, Ibrahim Gusau, the president of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), stated that a public vote would determine the fate of current head coach Jose Peseiro.
However, as of now, no definitive decision has been made regarding this public vote, leaving the situation hanging in the balance.
Rumours have also circulated about the NFF’s intentions to line up a temporary replacement for Peseiro, adding to the ambiguity surrounding the coaching staff.
While the Super Eagles have secured their spot in the 2023 AFCON, their final group game of the qualifier against Sao Tome on September 10 remains a must-honour fixture.
In a recent interview with Arise TV, Omeruo expressed his frustration with the situation, describing it as “crazy” and calling for an “urgent fix.”
The former Leganes star emphasised the importance of stability within the team’s technical crew, stressing that it is vital for Nigeria to have a consistent and reliable coaching staff to achieve their potential.
“When it comes to talent, Nigeria have amazing players,” the Turkey-based centre-back said.
“Even those that are on the bench in the national team go to their club sides and bang in goals week in, week out.
“We need to have a stable technical crew. A technical crew will take us to where we are supposed to be and give us exactly [the guidance] that we get in Europe.
“We do not even know who will be the coach in the next game. It is crazy, and it has to be fixed.”
As it stands, the Super Eagles are leading Group A of the qualification round with 12 points from five games, followed closely by Guinea-Bissau with 10 points.
Sierra Leone occupies the third position with five points, while Sao Tome sits at the bottom of the group with just 1 point.
Omeruo is correct bc consistency is the kick and key to success. Consistency brings the aroma and chemistry for understanding. One Coach today is building the Team after 2 years a new coach appointed by a new NFF President is destroying the Team. That’s why Nigeria after winning in Atlanta 1996 has failed to make quarter finals in any World Cup despite the abundance of Talents. NFF and its present Chair are lots of confused animals working in the glass house. Gusau do not have anything to gain if he fails to renew Peseiro’s contract. He should allow the chemistry flow if not I may surmise, he doesn’t have Nigeria’s football improvement at his heart except his personal ego and interest. He should go.
Let them.run their terms however the coach Peseiro appears to have little to offer judging by his changes and pattern of play if his contract has expired he should go .
Omeruo should retire from national team. Let every of those players who had already expired retire from national duty! Imagine where football is at the moment and where Nigerian defensive pair in the form of Ajayi, Omoruo, Ekong,….players who can’t even keep off poor strikers talk more of professional ones.
If these players can publicly confess their retirement and stress their reason to be “a decision that would create room for younger better positioned players”…their honour would be unforgotten in a hurry! But they won’t….they want to continue to shamelessly wear our green and white heritage that should carry the badge of honour and dignity.
Look at Nigerian descends everywhere, in top clubs doing world-class football thing…. how do you want this bright to honour and desire our green-white heritage where the last armour bearer was shamefully humiliated and totally defaced in the world scenes!
These folks presents wearing green-white as if it is a course!
NFF OFFICIALS is our undoing card. The coach and the coaching staffs are bought cheap articles, the fans turn and turn in a widening hear….the voice of our falconing faints before the sound…..
Who’s to be blamed??
Let them.run their terms however the coach Peseiro appears to have little to offer judging by his changes and pattern of play if his contract has expired he should go .
NFF haven’t learnt anything from Nigeria failure to qualify for the last World Cup. The custodian of Nigeria football are the ones sabotaging the country, we have never had any good and consistent preparation for any tournament we participate in. The so called indigenous coaches does not have what it takes to lead the set of players we have around the world. Sacking the presentat coach of the super Eagle and Super Falcon is a joke and embarrassing for Nigeria.
It’s very unfortunate that we can not patronise our indigenous coaches and give them enough time to build and rebuild a formidable team that can withstand any national team around the world. Before Westerof win nation’s cup and qualify for the world cup, he spent 5-6 years same as Bonfre Joe then, why can’t we give such time to indigenous coaches too? After their pay will lower than foreign ones. Must we enslave ourselves to white men? We need to be more reasonable, no any foreign coach has supercedes local coach in the history of Nigeria football.
