“I’m not really happy” – Record-equalling Nigerian striker reveals frustration despite TOTW display

The former Flying Eagles star was unstoppable at the weekend, but his brilliance did not translate to the maximum points for his club

Nigerian forward Akor Adams has expressed mixed emotions following an impressive display on his Ligue 1 debut for Montpellier against Le Havre, Soccernet.ng reports.

Despite a standout performance, the 23-year-old striker revealed his disappointment with the match’s outcome.

Adams recently made a €4.50 million switch from Norway’s Lillestrom to Montpellier on August 7. And just eight days after his transfer, he made his league debut for Montpellier in a thrilling clash against Le Havre on matchday one.

Adams, known for his confident approach, arrived at Montpellier with a strong track record. His time at Lillestrom saw him net 28 goals and provide seven assists in 50 games, underlining his attacking prowess. This reputation was vividly showcased in his performance against Le Havre.

In a stunning display of skill, Adams seized the opportunity in the second half, scoring two goals in two minutes. His first goal came from a powerful header off a well-placed cross, while the second resulted from a skillful run and a precise finish.

This exceptional performance earned him a well-deserved spot in the Ligue 1 team of the week.

After the match, Adams shared his thoughts in a Prime video interview as per Allezpaillade.

Reflecting on his debut, he stated, “I’m not really happy with this draw. We deserved to win given the chances we had. We will take this point and try to do better.”

Adams also acknowledged the role of teammate Téji Savanier, who provided the assist for his first goal.

“Téji Savanier really has a good foot; we know he’s a very good player. We had talked about it before; he had told me, ‘When I have the ball, be ready,’ and there I was, of course.”

Adams was thrilled with his debut brace but remained focused on future opportunities.

He said, “I’m happy to score two goals on my debut; we take that and we’ll try to score more.”

The former Flying Eagles star further explained the team’s tactical shift during the game, stating, “In the first half, we tried to play as long as possible in order to destabilize them. We played a lot more and kept the ball in the second period, which opened up spaces. We managed to push them back.”

Known for his positivity and optimism, Adams emphasized that his attitude resonated with the entire team.

“I’m like that—talking, haranguing—but it’s not just me; the whole team is like that,” he added. “I am a very positive and optimistic person. I believe in my teammates and my team.”

Akor Adams’ successful debut not only secured his place in Montpellier’s history but also made him the second Nigerian footballer to net a debut brace, following in the footsteps of Victor Osimhen, who set the record in 2019.
