Actual situation: Cremonese’s David Okereke ‘not a top target’ for Cagliari

The Nigerian star joined Cremonese from Club Brugge last season, and he played a crucial role for the Cremona-based club, but his effort was not enough for a Serie A stay

Former Nigeria U-23 forward, David Okereke, has emerged as a transfer target for Serie A clubs Cagliari and Bologna, as well as Turkish giants Besiktas JK, Soccernet.ng reports.

However, an exclusive interview with a Cagliari-based journalist, Matteo Zizola, sheds light on the situation, revealing that Okereke is not the top target for the Italian side.

Okereke played a significant role in Cremonese’s battle against relegation, but unfortunately, his efforts were not enough to keep the club in Serie A. Cremonese returned to the Serie B league after enduring 21 defeats in Serie A and securing only 5 victories.

Earlier reports indicated that both Cagliari and Bologna were keen on acquiring the Nigerian forward from the relegated side, while Besiktas JK also expressed interest in his services.

The journalist clarified the current situation in the interview with Soccernet.ng, stating that Cagliari needs two strikers this season. While Okereke was previously on their radar when he moved from Spezia Calcio to Club Brugge, he is no longer their primary target.

“Well, it’s really simple. Okereke was a target for Cagliari, back before he went from Spezia to Bruges. This summer, from what I know, is on the list, Cagliari needs 2 strikers, so it’s easy to put someone on its wish list. But Okereke is a real name, even if not on top of the targets.” Matteo said.

The journalist further revealed that 31-year-old Italian forward Manolo Gabbiadini is Cagliari’s top priority in the striker position, placing Okereke in the second-choice group of potential signings, alongside players like Borja Mayoral Moya and M’Bala Nzola.

He added: “[Manolo] Gabbiadini is the most wanted by the club, then Okereke is part of a second choice group (mostly second choice because they are costly) such as Okereke, mayoral, and Nzola. I don’t think, to be honest, he will end in Cagliari. Either he will end up somewhere else in Serie A or stay in Cremonese. But it’s way early to know.”

As Okereke’s future hangs in the balance, his potential move to Cagliari, Bologna, or Besiktas JK will be closely monitored by fans and football enthusiasts alike
