Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze showcased his skills and left AC Milan pondering their pursuit of him after finding the back of the net for Villarreal in their first preseason friendly against St Gallen, Soccernet.ng reports.
AC Milan had been fervently chasing Chukwueze, making him a top transfer target for this summer.
However, negotiations between Villarreal and Milan have hit a stumbling block, casting doubt over the potential move.
To AC Milan’s surprise, Villarreal decided to field Chukwueze in the preseason friendly, despite him not being initially included in the traveling squad.
As noted by Calciomercato.com, the Nigerian winger was omitted from the Villarreal squad that journeyed to Switzerland for their training camp scheduled from July 13 to July 21.
However, circumstances changed, and Chukwueze was given an opportunity to showcase his abilities.
Villarreal coach Quique Setien made a wise decision to include Chukwueze in the friendly against St Gallen.
The Nigerian forward did not disappoint, as he found the back of the net just thirty minutes into the match.
Despite Chukwueze’s goal, Villarreal suffered a heavy defeat, succumbing to a 6-1 loss against the Swiss side.
Chukwueze’s participation in Villarreal’s preseason program suggests that he may be considering the possibility of staying with the Spanish club, even in light of the serious interest from AC Milan.
AC Milan, despite acquiring Christian Pulisic from Chelsea, remains open to the idea of signing the Nigerian winger. However, this potential move would likely necessitate the sale of both Junior Messias and Alexis Saelemaekers.
While Torino has expressed interest in signing Messias, it remains uncertain where Saelemaekers might end up if Milan decides to pursue Chukwueze.
The impressive performances of Samuel Chukwueze last season have garnered him a host of admirers.
The Nigerian winger recorded 13 goals and provided 10 assists across all competitions for Villarreal, establishing himself as a highly sought-after talent.
