“He’s a dynamic winger” – Huddersfield reveal reasons for signing exciting Super Eagles-eligible star

With a statement on their official website, Huddersfield Town have announced the signing of Anglo-Nigerian winger Joseph Oluwagbemiga Mayowa Hungbo on a loan deal for the rest of the 2022/2023 season.

The 23-year-old left-footer join the Terriers from Watford, where he made seven appearances in the Championship all from the bench and amounting to only 90 minutes in total.

While he only made fleeting showings in the league, Hungbo started Watford’s two cup ties this season, at home to MK Dons in the Carabao Cup and away at Reading in the FA Cup.

Despite struggling to gain a foothold at Watford, Hungbo’s quality has never been in the doubt with the former Crystal Palace schoolboy impressing at Ross County last season.

Hungbo featured in 33 games for County in the Scottish Premier League, scoring seven times.

And Leigh Bromby, Huddersfield’s head of football operations is clear that the Terriers were aware of Hungbo’s quality and it was a major reason for signing the winger.

“We’re really excited to bring Joseph into the group and increase the competition for places within our forward line,” Bromby said.

“He’s a dynamic winger who will bring more pace to the team, giving us the option to progress forward in a direct manner.

“He had a really impressive time on loan in the Scottish Premiership last season and has done enough to be involved with the Watford first team this year, so we definitely think he’s ready to come in and contribute at this level straight away.”

Huddersfield head coach Mark Fotheringham also believes Hungbo will be a great addition to his struggling Terriers.

“Joseph really fits in our team with how we’re looking to play at present, complementing the attacking options we already have available to us out wide and through the middle, whilst introducing something new into the mix,” Mark Fotheringham noted.

“It’s no secret that we want to be more dangerous and dynamic in the final third, and Joe possesses the kind of attributes that can help us achieve that goal. Strong on the ball, hard working off it and a threat at set pieces, I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Hungbo joins a Huddersfield side sat deep in the lower half of the Championship table and has only put together just two wins in their last eight league and cup games.
