Serie A-linked Super Eagles forward reveals why he stayed back in France after scoring 22 goals in two years

Clubs in Italy and France had the Nigeria international on their most wanted list, but a transfer never materialised

Super Eagles forward Terem Moffi has confessed that no appealing offer came to him from any admiring club during the busy summer transfer window.

Despite a below-par goalscoring return in Ligue 1 last term, Moffi still reportedly attracted interest from France and abroad during the off-season break.

The 23-year-old was on the radar of French side Nantes as a potential replacement for Frankfurt-bound attacker Randal Kolo Muani.

Serie A campaigners Bologna also had the Nigeria international penned down as a possible strike partner for Austrian forward Marko Arnautovic.

None of those rumoured moves materialised, though, and Moffi stayed put at Lorient.

The former Kortrijk ace, however, admitted that he considered leaving Les Merlus, but a lack of options forced his hands.

“To be honest, if something interesting had come to me, I would have studied the proposal,” Moffi said in an interview with Ouest-France.

“But when I decided to continue the adventure with Lorient, it was a good solution. It was not a difficult choice to make.”

New contract for Moffi at Lorient?

The decision to stay turns out to be the right one as Moffi is back to his free-scoring self under the tutelage of new Lorient manager Régis Le Bris.

The Super Eagles striker is Lorient’s top marksman with six goals in nine Ligue 1 matches. Only PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and Neymar Junior have managed more in the French top-flight this term.

Still, Moffi is not thinking of committing his future to Lorient, with the Nigerian attacker brushing aside any thoughts of extending his contract.

“It’s not for me to talk about it, and I haven’t thought about it yet. I’m focused on the pitch,” Moffi added.

“Sign up for the long term with Lorient? I can’t promise the fans anything because I know absolutely nothing at the moment.”

Moffi signed for Lorient from Belgian club KV Kortrijk on October 1, 2020. That four-year contract will expire in the summer of 2024.

Moffi netted 14 Ligue 1 goals in his debut season and another eight the following year to become one of the most talked-about stars in France.
