Awoniyi played his first ever Premier League game for the Reds, but his efforts came up short
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi made his Premier League debut, but his efforts were not enough, as Newcastle United beat his Nottingham Forest side 2-0 in their opening Premier League game.
Forest played their first Premier League in over 24 years when they traveled to St. James’ Park to take on Newcastle United. However, it ended on a sore note.
Nottingham Forest were outclassed on the afternoon. Newcastle dominated the first half, but they were unable to hit the target as Dean Henderson made five saves.
However, the game changed in the second half, as Fabian Schar opened the scoring in the 58th minute.
Nottingham Forest coach Steve Cooper brought on Awoniyi in the 63rd minute to add some bite to the attack.
Awoniyi looked sharp, but he saw very few chances. He has eight touches and won two duels.
Callum Wilson added a second for Newcastle with twelve minutes to go. His strike was enough to ensure that Newcastle ran out victorious.
Nottingham Forest looked very blunt in attack, and they failed to get a shot on target. Nonetheless, Awoniyi and his teammates would look to get back to winning ways when they welcome West Ham next week.
