The 35-year-old Belgian joined the Naples outfit in 2013, but he has now ended his relationship with the Partenopeans
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has showered encomiums on his former Belgian teammate Dries Mertens following his exit from Napoli.
Mertens joined Napoli in 2013, and he had an unforgettable time with the Partenopeans. The Belgian forward registered 148 goals and 90 assists in 396 appearances for Napoli.
The 35-year-old has always played an integral role for Napoli in his nine-year stay.
However, Mertens’ stay at Napoli drew to an abrupt end at the end of June. The forward wanted a contract renewal, but Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis refused, stating that he wants to refresh the squad by signing younger players.
Osimhen joined Napoli in 2020, but it appears that Mertens left quite a mark, as the Nigerian striker showered encomiums on his ex-teammate as per Napoli Magazine.
“One of the greatest to ever wear the jersey, a legend and more. A real guardian, a brother, a friend.
“I appreciate your advice, your motivation, your jokes. Everything about you is unique. I hope to see you again my friend.”
According to reports, Mertens could remain in Serie A. However, there are also links with Galatasaray, Newcastle and Leeds.
