The Super Falcons crossed their first hurdle of the 2022 WAFCON, but they have a tougher battle ahead
The Super Falcons of Nigeria showed great class, quality, and dexterity to thrash Burundi 4-0 in their final group game of the 2022 Women’s Africa C of Nations.
Nigeria only needed a draw against Burundi to seal a spot in the quarterfinal of the WAFCON. However, they affirmed their superiority on the night.
The Super Falcons looked dangerous from the blast of the whistle. They controlled play and had the Burundians just where they wanted.
The Randy Waldrum-tutored ladies took the lead 25 minutes into the game. Atletico Madrid striker Rasheedat Ajibade calmly converted from the spot to put Nigeria ahead.
Before the Swallows could gather their thoughts, Peace Efih struck in the 28th minute to make it 2-0. Sixty seconds later, it was Uchenna Kanu who got her own goal to give Nigeria a three-goal cushion to take into the break.
The Swallows would have looked to keep the scoreline respectable in the second half. Unfortunately, their plans were soon out of the window, as Kanu scored seconds into the second period.
Nigeria had a lot of chances to score more goals in the second half, but the Burundians were lucky. The upright also played a role in ensuring that the WAFCON debutants did not leave the tournament with an embarrassing loss.
The game ended 4-0 to the Super Falcons at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat.
The victory ensures that Nigeria finishes second in group C. And it means that they would slug it out against Cameroon for a spot in the semifinals.
