Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers scored a brace and bagged an assist to help Genk to a 3-1 victory over Standard Liege at Cegeka Arena.
Genk looked to come back from the painful defeat they suffered at Club Brugge last week. And they had Standard Liege to contend with to get their first points of the season.
Wantaway Nigerian striker Dessers got a starters shirt for the tie, while Onuachu remained on the sidelines due to an injury.
The Limburgers did not waste time in affirming their dominance, and Dessers was at the heart of it. The Super Eagles star received a pass from Joseph Paintsil and struck the ball past Arnaud Bodart to put Genk ahead after five minutes.
Eleven minutes later, Dessers turned provider, as he set Tresor Ndayishimiye with a brilliant pass. The young Belgian promptly scored to ensure a two-goal lead.
Mihai Dragus responded for Standard Liege in the 24th minute. However, Dessers responded with his second goal of the afternoon to make sure the first half ended 3-1.
The second half was quite eventful, with chances falling to both sides. But they were unable to take their chances despite a combined 16 goal attempts.
Genk held out to ensure the game ended 3-1 at the Cegeka arena.
Dessers is having a brilliant start to the season. The Super Eagles star has scored three goals in his first two games.
