Transfers: Out-of-favour Super Eagles midfielder heading to Bulgaria

The winter transfer window is still several weeks away, but European clubs are already drawing up their wishlist of players to acquire and release

Nigerian midfielder Mikel Agu is ready to quit Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes and head to Bulgaria to get his career back on the right track.

Portuguese publication Guimaraes Digital claims that CSKA Sofia have opened negotiations with Vitoria and Agu’s representatives to secure the signing of the Nigerian international when the mid-season transfer window opens in January.

A move to the Bulgarian side will signal the end of a turbulent period for the 28-year-old who has lost favour at club and international level.

The FC Porto academy product has had his fair share of injury troubles, which has reduced his impact over the last 12 months.

Agu managed only 776 minutes on the pitch spread across 14 games for Vitoria last season, and he has been completely overlooked so far this term.

His miserable club form has seen him drop down the pecking order for the Super Eagles. Head coach Gernot Rohr presently prefers Brentford’s Frank Onyeka, and Malmo’s Innocent Bonke has under-studies to Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi.

A seven-cap Nigerian international, Agu last featured for the three-time African champions in a friendly defeat to Algeria in October 2020.

The tough-tackling midfielder’s contract with Vitoria expires next June, which could see CSKA Sofia pay only a small transfer fee to take him in January.

But the Bulgarian giants are also willing to wait until the summer when they will get Agu for free if negotiations with his current employers hit the wall.
