Ekong joins Okocha, Yobo club, but Watford suffers a home defeat against Wolves

in EPL, News, NewsNow, Nigeria

It was a day of mixed emotions for the former Udinese man as the Hornets suffered their third consecutive loss in the Premier League

Super Eagles star William Troost-Ekong had the special honour of leading out Watford against Wolves in their Premier League clash at Vicarage road.

However, it was a disappointing ending for him as Wolves scored two late goals to secure their first win of the season.

The Nigerian international had been named-check by his manager Xisco Munoz ahead of the game as a potential replacement for the departed Troy Deeney as Watford's captain.

Munoz did stay true to his words as Ekong became the latest Nigerian after the likes of Austin Jay-Jay Okocha and Joseph Yobo to captain a Premier League side.

But while it was a proud moment for him, it was not a good day for the Hornets, who have now lost three consecutive games since picking up their first win on the opening day.

The first half ended goalless, although it wasn't for lack of effort from the two teams, with Watford managing two shots on target while Wolves had three on target.

Wolves were the better team in the opening half, missing two big chances and commanding 60% of the possession.

However, Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Dennis also tested Wolves goalkeeper Sa after he was played through by his international compatriot Oghenekaro Etebo.

The second half resumed with both teams looking for the opener, but it was the away side that would eventually find the breakthrough, albeit in fortunate circumstances.

Bruno Lage's men took the lead in the 74th minute after Watford defender Francisco Sierralta directed a corner into his net.

Watford went in search for an equaliser, but it was Wolves that would score again, courtesy of a strike from Hwang Hee-Chan, seven minutes from time.

Chan's goal was the final nail in the coffin as Wolves secured their first three points of the campaign.
