The Super Eagles winger was not in the Yellow Submarines squad that lost to the Blues in the European Super Cup on Wednesday night
Samuel Chukwueze was missing in Villarreal’s team as Chelsea won the Super Cup following a 6-5 penalty shootout win over Unai Emery’s men.
Chukwueze has not played since he suffered an injury in the second leg of Villarreal’s Europa League semifinal clash against Arsenal last season.
Villarreal progressed to the final, where they beat Manchester United on penalties, but the Super Eagles winger did not play a part in the encounter.
It was hoped that Chukwueze would have fully recovered for the start of the new season. But ahead of last night’s clash against Chelsea, Villarreal’s manager Unai Emery confirmed to the media that his Nigerian youngster would miss the game due to an injury.
He did miss the clash as Chelsea came out on top in Belfast. Thomas Tuchel’s men took the lead through Hakim Ziyech in the 27th minute, but Villarreal levelled scores after halftime through Gerard Moreno.
Both sides could not be separated after 90 and 30 minutes of extra time, so the game went to penalties. Villarreal had the early advantage as Kai Havertz missed the first kick for Chelsea.
But Kepa Arrizabalaga, who came on for Edouard Mendy, saved two Villarreal players spot-kicks to complete a successful summer for Chelsea
