It was another weekend of football action across Europe’s domestic leagues, and once again, Nigerian players were not left out
Semi Ajayi was Nigeria’s leading star in Europe on Saturday after he scored the winner for West Brom in their win at Peterborough.
Ajayi, who was not included in Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles squad for September’s games, responded to the snub with a 94th-minute winner.
In his fourth appearance of the season, Ajayi slotted in Matt Phillips low cross to give West Brom a dramatic win over Peterborough, keeping them level on points with early Championship leaders Fulham.
Meanwhile, Frank Onyeka missed Brentford’s 1-1 draw against Aston Villa in the Premier League after testing positive for coronavirus.
Alex Iwobi came on in the second half to help Everton to a 2-0 win at Brighton. At the same time, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi both played key roles as Leicester City secured their second win of the season following a 2-1 win at Norwich.
In the Eredivisie, it was another disappointing evening for Maduka Okoye as he was unable to prevent Sparta Rotterdam from a 2-0 defeat at Go Ahead Eagles.
Okoye made five saves on the day, including two inside the box, but he could not stop Justin Bakker’s sixth-minute strike and Ioannis Foivos Botos’ effort in the 60th minute.
In France, Samuel Kalu came on at half-time, but Bordeaux were already three goals down in their clash at Nice by then. It was a day to forget for Les Girondins as they were thrashed 4-0 by Christophe Galtier’s men.
In Italy, Ola Aina received a yellow card as Torino lost 2-1 in their Serie A clash against Fiorentina. Meanwhile, new Super Eagles invitee Kingsley Michael helped Bologna secure a vital point at Atalanta.
