The Super Eagles centre back has signed a new one-year deal at the Ibrox, and the former Liverpool manager has revealed the reason behind the decision

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has praised the professionalism of Leon Balogun, saying it is one of the reasons the club decided to offer him a new deal.

Balogun joined the Gers from Wigan on a one-year deal last summer, but he is now set for an extended stay after signing a new contract to keep him at the club for another 12 months.

The 32-year-old’s performance was key in helping Rangers win their first Scottish Premiership title for the first time since 2011.

Balogun has made 28 appearances for the Gers this season, and Gerrard has cited the Nigerian international’s consistency and professional attitude as the reason why Rangers offered him a new deal.

“I am delighted to secure the services of Leon for another year,” Gerrard told Rangers website. Leon has been a consistent performer for me this season and has played a key role in strengthening our defence.

“His professionalism is obvious both on the field and in the dressing room as well. He is a role model for other players and has been a very positive influence within the squad.

Balogun turns 33 in June,  but Gerrard has no doubt he will continue to have a big influence in the Rangers squad.

“Although he is now 32, he can clearly continue to have a key influence in our squad for another year.

I know that he is still ambitious to become a better version of himself, and I know he is hungry for more success,” Gerrard concluded.
