The Nigerian playmaker has been instrumental to Les Girondins’ success in the new year, and it continued on Sunday afternoon with a home win over Angers
Samuel Kalu delivered an assured performance to help Girondins Bordeaux secure a fine 2-1 win over Angers in a Ligue 1 clash at the Stade Matmut-Atlantique.
Korea Republic forward Hwang Ui-jo got both of Bordeaux’s goals in the opening eleven minutes of the encounter. But Angelo Fulgini’s strike, five minutes before the break, reduced the visitors’ deficit.
Kalu, though, was one of the home side’s better performers before he was replaced just past the hour mark.
The Super Eagles star is gradually getting close to his mercurial best, as he completed one of his six attempted dribbles and won two of his nine ground duels in his role just behind striker Ui-jo.
Since his return from the injury that kept him out of action at the end of 2020, Bordeaux number 10 has helped his side secure three wins and a draw from their last four games.
Kalu will hope to contribute more to Les Girondins’ goal output, though, with the 23-year-old last finding the back of the net in the club’s 3-0 defeat of Dijon back in October.
However, he provided the assist to Bordeaux’s winning goal in the 1-0 victory at Rennes on November 20, which incidentally was the last match he featured in that year.
