The Nigerian international’s brilliance in front of goal continued on Wednesday night- although Genk missed out the chance to close the gap on Club Brugge
Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu was on target on Wednesday night as Genk were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Gent.
It was Onuachu’s 20the goal in 21 league games, and it extends his lead in the race for the golden boot. The 26-year-old is currently four goals clear of nearest challenger Thomas Henry.
Genk went into the clash, hoping to stay in touch with leaders and current champions, Club Brugge. However, they could only manage a 1-1 draw at home.
The Smurfs started brightly, and they took the lead in the seventh minute through Onuachu, who headed home a freekick from Theo Bongonda.
But Carlos Cuesta red card five minutes later meant Genk played the remaining minutes of the match with ten men.
Gent were able to capitalise on that extra-man advantage, and they drew level through Roman Yaremchuk on the stroke of half-time.
Despite the dismissal, John van den Brom’s men had the chance to win it after they were awarded a penalty in the 68th minute, but Bongonda’s resulting spot-kick was easily saved.
The result means Genk now find themselves nine points behind Club Brugge in the regular season. However, they have the chance to reduce the gap when the two sides clash on Sunday.
