In the biggest game of his career to date, Nigerian forward Terem Moffi came out in flying colours as he powered his lowly French side to a stunning victory over the champions
Terem Moffi netted a late winner to spur Lorient to an unlikely 3-2 victory over Paris St. Germain in what will likely go down as the biggest shocker of the 2020-21 Ligue 1 season.
Brazilian megastar Neymar Junior scored twice at the Stade Yves Allainmat-Le Moustoir, but Nigeria’s Moffi was the game’s hero as Lorient claimed the scalp of PSG.
Boasting the full complement of their world-class stars like Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Angel Di Maria, the champions arrived in Lorient looking to secure the win that would return them to the top of the league table.
And all was going according to plan against the lowly home side after Neymar scored twice on either side of the break to cancel out a Laurent Abergel opener for the hosts.
But the hosts gained confidence when manager Christophe Pélissier introduced Moffi on the hour mark, and the former Kortrijk ace was involved in the build-up to Yoane Wissa’s 80th-minute equaliser.
But Moffi’s most crucial contribution would arrive in the first minute of added time when he pounced on an Abergel pass to punish the visitors’ unwary defenders.
Moffi has now added Mauricio Pochettino’s side to his list of victims this term, with the 23-year-old finding the back of the net in each of his last five Ligue 1 matches.
He has also hit the target in consecutive games against Dijon, Bordeaux, Monaco, and Nice.
The win lifts relegation-battling Lorient to 16th on the league table with 18 points, three above fellow strugglers, Dijon and Nimes.
But the club’s €8 million signing from Belgian side Kortrijk will be crucial to any survival hopes Les Merlus harbour this term.
