Alex Iwobi Reacts To Austin Okocha Comparison

The Everton ace is the nephew of the Nigerian legend, and there are often questions regarding if the Super Eagles star can be just as good as his uncle

Nigeria international Alex Iwobi has maintained that he is aware that people often compare him with legendary midfielder Austin Okocha. Still, he is under no pressure to replicate the feats of his famous uncle.

Okocha is widely regarded as one of the most gifted playmakers to ever come out of Africa.

In the twilight of his career, the mercurial midfielder set the Premier League ablaze with his tricks, flicks, assists, and goals, quickly helping him seal his place as a Bolton Wanderers great.

Undoubtedly not as gifted as Okocha, Iwobi is gradually making a name for himself in the game, with the 24-year-old establishing his spots as the Super Eagles playmaker and Everton’s winger-cum-wingback.

Fond of the nutmeg, the former Arsenal insists he is encouraged by his uncle’s achievements and targets surpassing the older man’s output.

Speaking on Premier League Productions Weekend Warmup, Iwobi said on Okocha: “He’s always encouraging me, I don’t feel the pressure at all.

“He has always been telling me from young just go and express yourself, so I don’t feel no pressure whenever I’m stepping on the pitch.

“I remember as a kid just going to watch him, and some of the skills, some of the performances, the assists, the goals he used to get were outrageous.

“Maybe one day I can produce better than him.”

After excelling against Fulham last week, Iwobi is in line to make his 134th appearance in the Premier League when Everton welcome Leeds United to Goodison Park on Saturday evening.
