“We’re not taking any chances” – NFF President confident Super Falcons can win WAFCON 2024

President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, has backed the Super Falcons to take their rightful place in the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nation tournament, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria finished 4th in the 2022 edition of the competition while the Bayana Bayana of South Africa claimed victory. Nonetheless, the Super Falcons hold a historical advantage in the WAFCON tournament, winning eleven of all fourteen editions hosted since 1998.

Gusau, who has been in charge of Nigeria’s football since 2022, revealed his plans for the Super Falcons, highlighting he wants the team to give their best to win the WAFCON 2024 competition in Morocco.

“My projection for the team is that we are going back to get back our trophy, because as far as I’m concerned, that trophy belongs to Nigeria, and that’s why we are not taking any chance.

“At every single International break window, we allow them to have a quality, friendly match, and going forward now, before the tournament, I think we have about two breaks, which we intend to make sure that we utilize effectively, to make sure that they have good preparation,” the 60-year-old said in quotes revealed by Brila.

Additionally, Gusau revealed the friendlies will be an opportunity to integrate young home-based female players into the national team, to allow the team blend while reducing the age disparity in the squad.

Locally, as I have said, we are trying to see how we can inject these young girls from our local league, which we feel are going to bring a lot of positive impact into the team, and that is why we tried to organize a two-legged friendly match against Algeria some months back in Lagos and Ikenne.

“That helped us to get some of these girls, to inject them with the foreign-based players that gives us the results that we had in France,” the NFF President added.

The WAFCON 2024 tournament will be played in Morocco between the 5th and 26th of July, 2025.
