The Nigerian striker has been prolific in front of goal for Napoli in the club’s tune-up games, and he has revealed his desire to carry that scintillating form into the season proper
Napoli forward Victor Osimhen has expressed his delight at the goals he has netted for his new side during the preseason matches he has featured in so far. Still, the youngster insists he is focused on replicating that fine form when the Serie A begins in a few days.
Since making his multi-million-euro move from Lille, Osimhen has netted a hat-trick each in the Blues’ humbling of L’Aquila and Teramo, raising hopes among the Partenopei fans.
Diego Maradona Jr., son of the Argentine legend of the same name, recently cranked up the pressure on Osimhen by setting a 30-goal target for the 21-year-old.
But Osimhen maintains that he is not under pressure as he has not set any personal goal target for his debut season.
“I just want to keep winning scoring goals for Napoli,” Osimhen told The Nation.
“I’m happy for the goals I’ve so far scored in the preseason, but I’m not the kind of player that set the number of goals I’m going to score for my team; I’m a team player, and I don’t set my target before that of the team.
“I just want to score as much as I can for my team and help us a team to do well and win trophies, which is the most important thing for me.
“This is also the goal and objective of the club also; so there is no target for me this season, and I just want to do well and get the goals for my team.”
The Serie A returns next weekend with Napoli making the trip to face Parma on opening day, and Osimhen is full of confidence heading into the start of the Italian top-flight.
“I’m ever ready for the challenges ahead, and the only thing that can stop me is when I’m sick or have a knock.
“I’m ready to go into any game regardless of the team we are going to play against. I will also give my best to ensure that we get the best out of the games,” the former Royal Charleroi forward added.
