Samuel Chukwueze was a second-half substitute, but he could not prevent Villarreal from suffering a home defeat at the hands of Real Sociedad.
The talented winger has been one of Villarreals best players since La Liga resumed from the Coronavirus enforced break last month.
But despite his impressive performances in recent games, the Super Eagles started on the bench on Monday night. The first half started with both sides having a go at each other, but neither was able to find the breakthrough.
With Villarreal’s attack lacking pace, the Yellow Submarines manager, Javi Calleja, introduced Chukwueze after the break.
His introduction brought some spark to the side’s attack, but for all his excellent link-up play, it was Sociedad who took the lead courtesy of a Willian Jose strike in the 61st minute.
Having fallen behind, Villarreal tried to find an equalizer, but in the process of looking for the leveller, it was Sociedad that doubled their advantage through Diego Llorente.
Javi Calleja’s side pulled one back through Santi Carzola five minutes from time to set up a nervy finish. However, Sociedad held on for an important victory.
