Picking Nigeria’s greatest player ever is a hard one, but not for the Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medalist.
Former Super Eagles star, Daniel Amokachi has named John Mikel Obi has the greatest Nigerian player ever. The ex Everton man says Mikel’s honours at both club, and international level separate him from the rest.
Amokachi was part of the Super Eagles golden generation that dominated the 90s. The team won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations before going on to win the gold medal in the football event of the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.
Super Eagles team of the 90s is widely regarded as Nigeria’s greatest team ever, and they were blessed with talented players like Sunday Oliseh, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Finidi George, Emmanuel Amuneke and Rashidi Yekini.
But despite the array of talents in that squad, Amokachi went for Mikel as Nigeria’s greatest player. Mikel won the Nations Cup with the Super Eagles. At the same time, he was also successful with at the club level, winning two Premier League titles, the Europa League and Champions League with Chelsea.
And according to Amokachi, these achievements put Mikel above any other former Super Eagles star.
”Mikel is the greatest player,’’ Amokachi said on Brila FM’s Show “The Bull’s Pit.”
‘‘He has won everything that a player can hope to; the Champions League, Europa, AFCON in 2013 and he also captained the national team.
‘‘As a footballer, your laurels count, and that will surely count for Mikel because nobody has won that much in Nigerian football.’’
