Chidera Ejuke found the back of the net, but it was not enough as Heerenveen fell 2-1 at home to AZ Alkmaar in an Eredivisie clash.

Dani De Wit handed the visitors a first-half lead, but the Nigerian winger levelled the scores for De Superfriezen with a fine strike midway through the second half.

It was the 22-year-old’s seventh goal in 19 Eredivisie games this term. Myron Boadu, however, struck again for AZ a few minutes later to help Arne Slot’s side leave the Abe Lenstra Stadion with the maximum points.

In Spain, Samuel Chukwueze was one of the stand-out performers as the Yellow Submarine secured a 2-1 victory away to Deportivo Alaves in Saturday’s La Liga game.

The Super Eagles star was on from start to finish as Villarreal claimed their ninth win of the season.

Carlos Bacca opened the scoring with only ten minutes played at the Estadio de Mendizorroza, but Joselu restored parity for the hosts with a perfect finish ten minutes from time.

However, a late Fernando Nino strike bagged all three points for the visitors in Chukwueze’s 20th league appearance of the season.

In Belgium, Paul Onuachu had a day to forget as his Genk side collapsed 4-1 at Gent. Bogonda struck early for the champions before the rain of goals began from the rampant hosts.

Mohammadi levelled scores on the stroke of halftime before second-half goals from Bezus, Odjidja and Niangbo got fans at the Ghelamco Arena celebrating.

In South Africa, Daniel Akpeyi was once again brilliant as league leaders Kaizer Chiefs recorded a narrow 1-0 win away to Lamontville Golden Arrows.

The Super Eagles goaltender made a few fine saves to keep the Amakhosi in the game before a late Lebogang Manyama strike earned all three points for Ernst Middendorp’s men.
