Victor Osimhen’s outstanding performance in Lesotho which saw him claim a brace of assists and goals – his first in a Super Eagles jersey – has drawn plaudits from a former top scorer of the continental championships.
Retired Nigeria goal king Odion Ighalo has congratulated his his national team successor on grabbing his first brace in Nigeria’s colours in the 4-2 win over the Crocodiles, a 2021 African Cup of Nations qualifying match.
Former Watford target man Ighalo retired from international duties after the 2019 AFCON tournament where he emerged the top goalscorer with 5 goals, helping Nigeria to a bronze medal finish.
The one-time Granada striker was always going to be missed, but a young protégé is now bearing all the goalscoring burden for Gernot Rohr’s side, with Osimhen claiming four goals in his last four starts for the three-time AFCON champions.
His latest strikes being his fine brace in Maseru on Sunday to shoot Nigeria to the top of Group L with the maximum six points in two matches.
Osimhen took to social media to express his delight at the delightful individual and collective performances and his post was duly acknowledged by Odion Ighalo who responded by saying:
“Congrats bro, keep the fire burning.”
