Barcelona are set to make a shock bid for forgotten Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian according to reports.

The Blaugrana are said to be looking for a defensive back up for Nelson Semedo who is the club’s first-choice right-back and have identified Darmian as a perfect candidate.

With United signing Aaron Wan- Bissa this summer, Darmian’s Old Trafford career is as good as over.  The Italian international has struggled to make the cut at Old Trafford since he moved from Torino in 2015, making just 60 appearances.

According to Spanish and English media, the 29-year-old could be playing his football with La Liga champions, Barcelona next season.

Although he is not the first choice for Ernesto Valverde’s men, the club authorities he will cost less than the club’s first choices in Real Betis Junior Firpo and Bayern Munich’s David Alaba.

Darmian is also a popular choice among Barca’s chiefs because of his versatility. The former Torino defender can play both as a right-back and left-back. Barcelona believe he could be the perfect back up for both Semedo and Jordi Alba who are the club’s full-backs.

He was reportedly set for a move to Italian Champions, Juventus last summer, but a deal could not be agreed between the two parties.
