Paul Ince has charged at four current Manchester United stars for putting in below par performance last term and put them under the spotlight ahead of the new season.
The former Red Devils midfield enforcer has taken aim at the quartet of Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial for Manchester United’s lame sixth place finish in the 2018/19 season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side ended the season 29 points behind eventual champions, Manchester City, and scored the fewest number of goals among the top six sides.
Ince was particularly livid about Lingard’s shoddy showings and was displeased with the club giving Rashford a new contract despite the English striker scoring a few goals.
“You’ve got Marcus Rashford who scored 11 goals last year and gets a new contract,” he told BBC 5Live.
“Jesse Lingard was diabolical last year, he really, really was.
“Then there’s Alexis Sanchez. They got nothing out of Sanchez whatsoever.”
Manchester United have made signing a top defender a priority with Leicester City’s Harry Maguire reportedly close to making the switch to Old Trafford.
Paul Ince, however, believes the club need to be paying more attention to the forward line as well.
“So as much as we’re talking about the defence and Chris Smalling and Harry Maguire, surely we’ve got to be looking at who’s going to be playing up top.
“We need to be looking at that because attacking-wise they’re not great.
Martial? He’s a fizzy drink. He pops now and then. One moment he’s great, one moment he’s not.”
Solskjaer, whose men are currently on a pre-season tour, is looking to add more attacking options to his side with Lille’s Nicolas Pepe reported to be interesting the Red Devils.
