Balogun eager to prove himself at AFCON 2019

Brighton defender, Leon Balogun has said he hopes to be a vital part of the National team when they compete in the Africa Cup of Nations in June.

Speaking to BBC, Balogun said although he isn't getting enough playing time at Brighton, he wants his first AFCON appearance to be a favourable one.

“I really hope to play a significant role in my first Nations Cup for Nigeria, but first I want to keep working hard to make a strong case for regular games at Brighton,” Balogun told BBC Sport.

Balogun also mentioned his frustration at being kept on the sidelines even after he fully recovered from his injury, however, he's ready to keep working and await an opportunity to prove himself to the manager.

“It’s very frustrating not to be involved but you can only keep your head up by focusing on helping the club when called upon.

“What is important is to always put myself in the right place as usual. If I am needed anytime to start a game or come in, I’ll be ready for that, it’s all I can do.”

Balogun joined Brighton in 2018 from Mainz 05 after spending three seasons at the German side. He has made eight appearances so far, scoring once.
