Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama has been overwhelmingly voted by Complete Sports readers as the 2014 Nigerian Player of the Year.
The Lille goalkeeper beat Obafemi Martins, Ahmed Musa and Ejike Uzoenyi to become the first player to win the award.
In a poll of thousands of Complete Sports readers, Enyeama got more than twice the votes of the other three finalists combined, underlining his fantastic performances in 2014.
The former Enyimba star got 71 per cent of the votes, leaving Martins (22 per cent) in second place. Musa (5.5 per cent) and Uzoenyi (1.5 per cent) finished third and fourth respectively.
Enyeama set a clean sheet record in France in the 2013/2014 season and was also in fine form in the second half of 2014, leading him to several accolades.
He was a finalist in both the BBC and CAF African Player of the Year awards, narrowly losing both but still earning plaudits from across the globe. He was second to Algeria’s Yacine Brahimi in the BBC award, and was third behind Cote d’Ivoire’s Yaya Toure and Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the CAF polls.
Enyeama was voted Complete Sports Player of the Month in April, June and December.
Runner-up to Enyeama, Martins, had a fantastic 2014, scoring a record 17 league goals for Seattle Sounders in the American Major League Soccer.
The former Newcastle and Inter frontman was also nominated for the 2014 MLS Player of the Year award, but he lost to LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane.
Martins was voted Complete Sports Player of the month in May, August and September.
Musa emerged in 2014 as a top player in Europe following his exploits with CSKA Moscow both in the Russian top flight and the UEFA Champions League.
He was in the CAF Player of the Year final shortlist of five and was voted Complete Sports Player of the Month in October.
Uzoenyi was voted Complete Sports Player of the Month in January 2014 after emerging one of the best players at the African Nations Championship in South Africa.
