Rangers International are back at the top of the NPFL after a 1-0 win over Bendel Insurance at the Awka City Stadium, with defender Chidozie Iwundu's header settling a rescheduled fixture.
Iwundu scored in the 47th minute, heading in from a long throw-in, according to Sports247's report on Thursday. Sports247 said the result returned Rangers to the summit, in the same week that Rivers United, their rivals at the top, were handed a league sanction of their own.
The result follows a Matchday 11 in which four clubs finished level on 18 points, as we reported after the weekend. Rivers United and Rangers drew 1-1 in Port Harcourt on 1 November.
Rivers United's suspended sanction
The NPFL has given Rivers United a suspended fine of ₦15m and a suspended deduction of three points and three goals. The league says the club blocked its broadcast partner, Murphy Ben International, from the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium for the Rangers game, which had been advertised for live television.
The sanctions only take effect if Rivers United break the league's broadcasting rules again this season. The club's media director, Charles Mayuku, said in a statement dated 1 November that Rivers acted on an NPFL email of 30 October indicating the game was not on the official live-streaming schedule, and that the club did not refuse any television crew.
Analysis: Why the penalty matters in a tight table
With the top four level on points last weekend, a three-point deduction would be enough to reshuffle the leading group. That makes this a warning with real weight for Rivers United, even though nothing is deducted now.
For Rangers, a single header from a set piece is the kind of margin that can decide a table this close. The next round will show whether they can hold the top spot and whether Rivers can stay clear of any further trouble off the pitch.
Rangers' season has already had a continental setback, when they lost a 2-0 lead to MC Alger in the CAF Champions League.
