Victor Osimhen: Why Nigeria’s Champions League scoring record is now almost twice his nearest rival’s

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen scored Galatasaray's fourth goal in a 4-2 Champions League win at Lille on Wednesday, taking him to 17 goals in the competition, the most by any Nigerian.

The goal came in the league phase and, according to Afrik-Foot, set three new marks. Soccernet had previewed the game as a chance for him to find his first European goal of the season against his former club.

Afrik-Foot reported that Osimhen has 14 goals in all European competitions for Galatasaray, passing Milan Baros, who had 12, to become the club's record foreign scorer in Europe.

The three milestones, in numbers

He now has 8 Champions League goals for Galatasaray. Only Hakan Sukur (13) and Burak Yilmaz (10) have scored more for the club in the competition, Afrik-Foot reported.

His 17 Champions League goals in total are the most by a Nigerian. Compatriots Ademola Lookman and Obafemi Martins are joint second with 9 each, the same report said. He is also the first Nigerian to score in the Champions League for three different clubs.

Analysis: Why the gap matters more than the record

A lead of eight goals means Osimhen has nearly double the tally of the next two Nigerians. Anyone chasing him would need eight goals just to draw level, before counting what he adds from here.

Inside Galatasaray, the arithmetic is kinder to him. Two more Champions League goals for the club would put him level with Yilmaz on 10, and five would equal Sukur's 13, if the figures reported by Afrik-Foot are right. That makes the club's own record books the next target, with the Nigerian mark already secure.

The picture also adds to the case in the debate over where he sits among Nigeria's greatest forwards. Records alone do not settle that argument, but few Nigerians have scored on this stage with this regularity.

Tallies in match coverage can differ by a goal or two between outlets, so the exact totals here are those given by Afrik-Foot. Galatasaray's next Champions League fixture will show how quickly the next milestone comes.
