Tosin Adarabioyo: Why a Tottenham injury scare matters to the Super Eagles, even though he has never played for Nigeria

Nigeria-eligible defender Tosin Adarabioyo is waiting for a medical assessment after a suspected injury in Tottenham Hotspur's 3-1 Premier League win over Coventry City.

The England-born centre-back, who has Nigerian parents, was playing his full Premier League debut for Spurs, according to Legit.ng. He was replaced in the 71st minute by Matheus Fernandes.

The report cites The Standard for the detail that he went down inside the box and gestured for the medical staff. It cites Metro for the news that the severity and time out are awaiting assessment. Soccernet has no confirmation from Tottenham on the diagnosis.

A Super Eagles target who said no before

Adarabioyo played for England up to Under-19 level and remains eligible for the Super Eagles. Legit.ng reports that the Nigeria Football Federation approached him under former coach José Peseiro and he declined at the time.

Super Eagles players Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka also came on as substitutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, per the same report.

Soccernet covered his arrival at Spurs in Tottenham sign ex-Fulham star who wants to play for Nigeria. For more on how the Eagles are building their squad, see our earlier Super Eagles coverage.

Analysis: why an eligible player's fitness still counts

Adarabioyo has never represented Nigeria and turned down the federation once before, so there is no call-up to lose. What an injury changes is the timeline: a Premier League defender who has just moved clubs needs minutes to build the profile that would make a second approach worthwhile.

Spurs have not confirmed the diagnosis, so the scan result decides whether this is a footnote or a delay of weeks.

Tottenham's next medical update will show whether the defender faces any time out.
