Super Falcons news: Veteran defender retires from international football after 5 WAFCON titles

Super Falcons defender Osinachi Ohale has announced her retirement from international football after 16 years with Nigeria, bringing an end to a decorated career that included five WAFCON titles, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 34-year-old announced in an emotional message on Instagram on Friday, reflecting on her journey from a young player dreaming of representing Nigeria to becoming one of the country's most experienced defenders.

Ohale leaves the international stage having represented Nigeria at four FIFA Women’s World Cups and seven WAFCON tournaments.

She finished her career with 86 caps for the Super Falcons and was part of the Nigerian teams that won the continental title in 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2024.

Osinachi Ohale: The jersey will never leave my heart

Announcing her decision, Ohale described the retirement as a difficult one but said she could look back on her time with Nigeria with gratitude.

“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football,” she wrote.

“From the young girl who first dreamed of wearing the green and white, to the woman who had the honour of doing so for 86 caps, I can only look back with a heart overflowing with gratitude.

“I have stood on the biggest stages in the world, representing Nigeria at four FIFA Women’s World Cups and seven WAFCON, and I am incredibly proud that we lifted the African title five times.”

Ohale was part of Nigeria's WAFCON-winning squads in 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018 before helping the Super Falcons reclaim the continental crown in Morocco in 2025, when the tournament was officially the 2024 edition.

CAF recognises Ohale as one of only five players to have won the WAFCON title five times, alongside fellow Nigerians Florence Ajayi, Perpetua Nkwocha and Francisca Ordega.

Four World Cups and a memorable goal

Ohale also appeared in four FIFA Women's World Cups. One of the defining moments of her World Cup career came in 2023 when she scored Nigeria's second goal in their 3-2 victory over hosts Australia.

She was named Player of the Match after an impressive display in the encounter. The Pachuca defender returned to the World Cup stage in 2023 after already featuring at the 2011, 2015 and 2019 editions, cementing her status as one of Nigeria's most experienced players.

Her international career also included the 2024 Olympic Games and seven appearances at the WAFCON.

Ohale was part of the Super Falcons squad at the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco, where Nigeria began their title defence with a 3-2 defeat to Malawi before beating Zambia and Egypt.

The Super Falcons were eventually eliminated by Cameroon in the quarter-finals and subsequently lost to South Africa in the African World Cup play-off.

Ohale started all five of Nigeria's matches at the tournament and played every minute. Despite the disappointments that came towards the end of her international career, Ohale said she had no regrets about her decision to represent Nigeria.

She described the memories, sacrifices and relationships built during her 16 years with the Super Falcons as more important than the numbers attached to her career.

“I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time,” she wrote.

“To my teammates, coaches, staff, family, friends, Nigeria Football Federation and everyone who walked this journey with me — thank you.

“You became part of a chapter of my life that I will treasure forever.”

Ohale also reserved a special message for the Nigerian supporters who followed her career.

“To the Nigerian fans: thank you for believing in us, supporting us, celebrating with us, and standing by us through every high and every low,” she added.

“Your love made wearing this jersey even more special.”

The defender, who has played club football for Rivers Angels, Delta Queens, Houston Dash, Vittsjö, Växjö, Real Madrid's former women's side, Roma, Madrid CFF, Alavés and Pachuca, now brings her international career to a close.

‘Forever a Super Falcon’

Ohale ended her retirement message by acknowledging the privilege of representing Nigeria and making it clear that her connection with the national team will remain.

“Today, I say goodbye to international football with no regrets — only gratitude. 86 caps. 16 years. 4 World Cups. 7 WAFCON. 5 WAFCON titles.

“But the greatest achievement of all is knowing that I had the privilege to serve my country. Forever a Super Falcon. Forever Nigerian.”

She'll be hoping to elongate her career at club level after bowing out of action for the record African Champions.
