Super Eagles: Is this the worst Nigerian jersey in 11 years?

Nigeria's relationship with Nike has produced some of the most recognizable shirts in African football, but this latest one for the Super Eagles has raised eyebrows, Soccernet.ng reports.

From the instantly iconic 2018 World Cup jersey to the more experimental 2020 design, the Super Eagles have rarely lacked personality since the American sportswear giant became the team's kit supplier in 2015.

But the latest home jersey has raised a different question: Did Nike finally missed the mark with Nigeria?

The 2026 Super Eagles home shirt was released in March, but this international break will be the first time that it would be used in a competitve game. It features a light-green base, darker green panels around the shoulders and sides, a subtle dotted pattern and white detailing around the collar and sleeves.

There is nothing particularly outrageous about the design, but that may actually be the problem, especially when you consider that it was supposed to be our World Cup jersey, if we had qualified.

It lacks the identity of Nike's best Nigeria shirts

Nigeria's 2018 home jersey did not simply look different from previous shirts. It became part of the team's identity.

Its bold chevron-inspired design combined green, white and black and quickly became one of the most celebrated football shirts in the world. On Football Kit Archive, it currently carries a 4.25/5 rating from more than 1,400 votes.

The 2020 home shirt also remains highly rated at 4.24/5, showing that Nigerian supporters have generally responded well when Nike has taken risks with the design.

Nike and Nigeria link up again to drop the waviest jersey of 2020.

However, The 2026 shirt takes a safer route. Its green-on-green pattern is considerably less striking, while the dotted graphic does not have the same immediate visual impact as the 2018 chevrons or the more elaborate 2020 concept.

For a country whose football shirts have become almost as recognisable as its footballers, that is a noticeable step backwards in personality.

Hit or Miss?

Given how many hits Nike have had with the Super Eagles jersey in recent years, this one will definitely rank low.

The real disappointment is the gap between the 2026 shirt and the standard Nike established with Nigeria's best designs.

The 2018 jersey was a cultural phenomenon. It was even voted as the best jersey at the 2018 World Cup at that time. The 2020 shirt showed that Nike could continue experimenting with Nigerian football's visual identity. The 2022 design, despite dividing opinion, at least had a clear personality.

The 2026 home shirt feels more restrained. Although, it is way better than the 2016 home kit that just had a lazy dark green all through, Nike could definitely have done better.

Nonetheless, this is the end of Nigeria's association with the US sportswear brand. Last month, a new contract was agreed with Adidas that will fetch Nigeria $8.5 million yearly. They are expected to make their debut next year.
