Yira Sor reveals why Amedspor move could be “fun”

Super Eagles forward Yira Sor has revealed what he is looking forward to after completing his move to Turkish side Amedspor, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 26-year-old’s future has now been sorted, bringing an end to the uncertainty surrounding his career at Belgian club Genk and ending his four year stay with the club.

Sor joined Genk in December 2022 and initially established himself as an important player for the Belgian side. However, he gradually lost his place in the team due to inconsistency and the high level of competition within the squad.

As a result, his appearances reduced over the years, including last season, when he struggled to maintain a regular place in the team.

The Nigerian winger was also the subject of intense transfer speculation during the winter transfer window, with interest from the Bundesliga. A move to one of the German clubs appeared close at one point, but the deal eventually broke down and did not materialize.

Sor has now moved on from Genk after making 119 appearances across all competitions, scoring 17 goals during his time at the club.

Yira Sor: Super Eagles star eyes new challenge at Amedspor

Sor has joined Amedspor in a deal worth €3 million and has signed a three year contract with the Turkish club as he prepares for the next chapter of his career.

Speaking in an interview with Footy-Africa, the Super Eagles forward revealed that he is excited about the new challenge and is looking forward to playing in a new league while helping Amedspor achieve success.

“After spending time in Belgium, I am excited about this new challenge in a competitive league like the Turkish Süper Lig,” Sor said.

“I am happy that the two clubs were able to reach an agreement. For me, this is a new challenge and one that I am willing to take on.”

Sor will now join a growing list of Nigerian players in the Turkish league as their number continues to increase in the country.

He will also team up with fellow Nigerian Gift Orban at Amedspor after the striker completed a loan move to the club from Hoffenheim earlier this summer.

Meanwhile, Kelechi Iheanacho also moved to Turkey after his contract with Celtic expired. The Super Eagles forward joined Bursaspor and went on to make an impressive debut for the club.

Other Nigerians currently playing in Turkey include Victor Osimhen, Paul Onuachu, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Anthony Dennis and several others.

For Sor, having so many Nigerian players in the league is another reason to look forward to his time in Turkey. The former Genk forward is particularly excited about facing some of his compatriots on the pitch.

“There are a lot of Nigerian players in Turkey, especially our captain Wilfred Ndidi, who is with Beşiktaş, Victor Osimhen at Galatasaray and many others,” Sor added.

“It should be fun facing my fellow Nigerians in the league, and I am also happy that Gift Orban is at the club.

“I want to thank the Genk fans for their support throughout all the years I was with them. I love them, but this is a new challenge for me.”

Sor could make his Amedspor debut alongside Orban when they face Erzurumspor in their 2026/27 Süper Lig opener on Saturday.

The Nigerian winger will be hoping to make an impressive start to life in Turkey and play a key role for Amedspor as they begin their new campaign.
