Super Eagles goalkeeper set to switch clubs after Wrexham snub

Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is set to leave Wrexham this summer after the club signaled that he is no longer considered a key player, Soccernet.ng reports.

​Okonkwo joined the Red Dragons on a free transfer from Arsenal in July 2024. He enjoyed a stellar debut campaign, keeping 19 clean sheets in 33 appearances to help propel the club to Championship promotion.

​In his first Championship season, he remained solid, registering 10 clean sheets across 39 matches. However, toward the end of the campaign, manager Phil Parkinson began benching him in favor of Danny Ward.

​This fueled speculation that the club no longer viewed Okonkwo as their undisputed number one. Those doubts were all but confirmed two weeks ago when Wrexham signed Sunderland goalkeeper Nathan Patterson for €8 million.

​Okonkwo's reduced role was laid bare last weekend when he was omitted entirely from the matchday squad for Wrexham's Championship opener. Patterson started in goal, conceding once in a 1-1 draw.

​At 25, Okonkwo is entering a crucial stage of his career where regular minutes, steady development, and consistent momentum are vital. Maintaining his spot in the Nigerian national team setup makes regular first-team football an absolute priority.

​Okonkwo has been linked with Championship sides Charlton Athletic, Derby County, and Bolton Wanderers, though none have submitted a formal bid.

​talkSPORT reports that Charlton may have opened talks with Wrexham regarding a potential move, though nothing has been finalized. The Valley appears to be his most plausible destination, especially with Thomas Kaminski expected to depart before the deadline.

​With the summer window closing in two weeks, suitors will need to act swiftly. Okonkwo is currently valued at €5 million on Transfermarkt, and Wrexham will likely demand a fee in that region before sanctioning a sale.
