Ibrahim Gusau resigns: How NFF crisis could affect Nigeria’s 2027 AFCON preparations

Ibrahim Musa Gusau has resigned as president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), alongside members of the federation’s executive committee, Soccernet.ng reports.

Gusau confirmed his resignation at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, bringing an abrupt end to an administration that had come under intense pressure following a string of failures involving Nigeria’s national teams.

The Super Eagles missed the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing to DR Congo on penalties in the African play-off final, while the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991.

Nigeria’s age-grade teams have also struggled, with the Golden Eaglets missing the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations and the Flying Eagles facing their own qualification setbacks. The NFF is in a leadership crisis at precisely the point when preparations for another major tournament are beginning.

The timing is particularly awkward for the Super Eagles, who are due to begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign in September, with Madagascar their first opponent.

NFF crisis leaves Super Eagles facing uncertainty

The immediate concern is not necessarily whether Nigeria can prepare a team capable of qualifying for the tournament.

The Super Eagles are one of the strongest sides in their qualifying group, but the administrative transition could affect key areas of preparation like funding, logistics, camp arrangements, and communication with the coaching staff.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group L alongside Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau, with the first two matchdays scheduled between September 21 and October 6.

That gives whoever takes charge of the NFF very little time to settle into the role before the national team enters competitive action.

The situation is made more complicated by the fact that the NFF’s elective congress had been scheduled for September 27, meaning the federation was already heading towards a leadership transition before Gusau’s resignation. The date was moved to accommodate Nigeria’s September 25 AFCON qualifier against Madagascar.

Now, rather than preparing for an election under an existing administration, Nigerian football must deal with a leadership vacuum while the AFCON campaign is about to start.

How will the NFF crisis affect AFCON preparations?

The biggest danger is disruption. The Super Eagles cannot afford another period of organisational uncertainty after the disappointment of missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The incoming leadership will have to move quickly to establish who is responsible for the team’s logistics, finances and technical support before the September window.

There is also the question of coach Eric Chelle and his relationship with the new administration. The Franco-Malian tactician was handed a new bumper contract about two months ago, but even that has question marks written over it.

A leadership change does not automatically mean a change on the technical bench, and stability would be the more sensible approach with competitive fixtures approaching.

New NFF leadership must swing into action

The Super Eagles’ AFCON qualification campaign begins in weeks, while they also have to rebuild after missing the World Cup.

The new leadership must separate the political transition from the national team’s immediate needs.

Nigeria have already experienced the consequences of allowing administrative problems to overshadow football. The Super Eagles missed two successive World Cups, while the Super Falcons’ historic World Cup failure and struggles among the youth teams exposed wider problems within the system.

If the NFF crisis delays preparations for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, the consequences could extend beyond one international window.

The situation is further complicated by the EFCC and ICPC investigations into the utilisation of the N12bn Federal Government intervention fund and reports of possible restructuring of the federation.

FIFA's rules on the independence of member associations mean any direct government takeover of the NFF could raise the prospect of sanctions, although there is currently no indication that FIFA has threatened Nigeria with a ban.
