Jordan vs Nigeria - Match preview, team news, predictions

Jordan and Nigeria will meet for just the third time in senior international football on Tuesday evening, as both sides conclude their campaign at the four-nation invitational tournament in Antalya, Turkiye, Soccernet.ng reports.

While it is officially a friendly competition, the motivations driving each nation could not be further apart.

For Jordan, who secured qualification for their first-ever FIFA World Cup earlier this year, every minute on the pitch represents critical preparation ahead of a daunting Group J draw that includes Argentina, Austria, and Algeria.

Nigeria, by contrast, will not be present at the Mundial after their heartbreaking playoff defeat to DR Congo on penalties last November.

Match Preview

The Super Eagles warmed up for this clash with a composed 2-1 victory over Iran on Friday. Moses Simon struck early, Akor Adams added a second after the break, and although Mehdi Taremi pulled one back late on, Eric Chelle's side never looked rattled.

Victory against Jordan would guarantee Nigeria the Antalya tournament crown regardless of the outcome between Iran and Costa Rica, a modest trophy perhaps, but one that would represent Chelle’s second piece of silverware in under a year following last May’s Unity Cup triumph in London.

Since Frenchman's appointment, Nigeria have gone 19 official matches unbeaten in regular time, scoring 37 goals while conceding just 14.

Their AFCON 2025 campaign in Morocco was particularly eye-catching, yielding 14 goals in seven games, a national tournament record, before they secured bronze after defeating Egypt on penalties in the third-place playoff.

Jordan’s form since sealing World Cup qualification has been uneven. They have won six of their last 13 matches, but defeats to Albania and Tunisia exposed defensive vulnerabilities. Friday’s 2-2 draw with Costa Rica followed a similar script, twice ahead through Baha’ Faisal and Ibrahim, only to concede in the 91st minute.

Yet this is a team capable of cohesion when focused. Jordan reached the FIFA Arab Cup final in December, defeating the UAE, Kuwait, Egypt, Iraq and Saudi Arabia en route before losing narrowly to Morocco.

That run demonstrated their tactical discipline and counter-attacking potency, particularly through Mousa Al-Tamari.

However, injuries have complicated matters. Ali Olwan, Yazan Al-Naimat and Tammer Bany are all sidelined, stripping Jamal Sellami’s side of attacking depth and defensive stability.

Team News

Nigeria remain without Victor Osimhen, who is recovering from a fractured forearm. Calvin Bassey withdrew before the tournament, while Stanley Nwabali and Ola Aina are also absent.

Chelle rotated heavily against Iran and is expected to do so again. Emmanuel Fernandez impressed on debut, while Paul Onuachu, Chidera Ejuke, Raphael Onyedika, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru are pushing for starts.

Jordan will rely heavily on Al-Tamari’s creativity in a likely 3-4-3 setup, but the absence of Olwan and Al-Naimat limits their attacking threat.

Prediction

Jordan’s World Cup motivation ensures competitiveness, but Nigeria’s depth, defensive organisation, and attacking variety should ultimately prove decisive.

Even with rotation, the Super Eagles possess superior quality across most departments.

Prediction: Jordan 0-1 Nigeria

A tight contest is likely, but Chelle’s men should edge it, and leave Antalya with silverware and momentum firmly intact.
