Following in the footsteps of former Arsenal star Alex Iwobi, another youngster from the club has hinted at a possible switch of allegiance to Nigeria, even though he remains eligible to play for France and England…

Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri has publicly acknowledged his Nigerian roots and has sparked fresh speculation over a possible future with the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Soccernet.ng reports.

The highly rated teenager, who joined the Ligue 1 giants on loan from Arsenal during the winter transfer window, has already made an impression in France with regular appearances and a goalscoring debut, and his latest comments have now shifted attention to his international future.

When asked about former Nigerian stars Taye Taiwo and Wilson Oruma, who previously represented Marseille, Nwaneri made his heritage clear and hinted at his desire to make an impact at the club.

“Yes, I know. I’m Nigerian, and I am here to help the team as much as possible,” Nwaneri said to R.org.

His statement has been interpreted as an open acknowledgement of his eligibility for Nigeria, at a time when the Super Eagles continue to monitor young players with dual nationality across Europe.

Arsenal youngster’s profile in France

Nwaneri joined Marseille from Arsenal in search of regular first-team football after limited opportunities in north London.

The move has already paid off, with the teenager settling quickly and earning minutes under the club’s coaching staff.

He previously revealed that he did not hesitate when the chance to join Marseille arose, describing the French side as a massive club with passionate fans and a clear playing style.

“When I heard it, I didn’t even think. My answer straight away was yes because I think this was a great opportunity,” he said, as quoted by Afrik Foot NG.

Nwaneri’s international future could soon become a major talking point for the country, having publicly confirmed his Nigerian heritage.
