Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove, who missed the Super Eagles clash due to fitness concerns, has reflected on his side’s Round of 16 defeat at AFCON 2025, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Al-Quwa Al-Jaw defender praised his teammates for their effort and expressed personal support for former colleagues in the Nigerian team to win the AFCON trophy.
Despite not featuring in the game, the Kaizer Chiefs star acknowledged the performance of his fellow Mambas and spoke about the lessons learnt from the match against one of Africa’s strongest sides.

Dove: Ex-Kaizer Chiefs defender on team effort
When asked by Soccernet.ng if he thought his presence could have made a difference, Dove was humble in his assessment.
“No, I think everyone is important. The guys did everything they could.”

He added that although Mozambique’s game plan did not go perfectly, the experience would serve as a valuable lesson for the team moving forward.
“It was one of those days where not everything we planned went according to plan. But it’s a lesson, and we can only look forward and try to get better from these experiences.”
Mozambique’s journey praised
Dove also reflected on the progress Mozambique has made in the tournament. He also noted their determination as the key factor in reaching the knockout stages.
“We reached a stage where not a lot of people expected us to be. We got here through camaraderie, unity and determination. Everyone who stepped onto the pitch did their very best.”

Personal ties with Stanley Nwabali, others
Despite the loss, Dove expressed admiration for Nigeria, particularly former Kaizer Chiefs teammate Stanley Nwabali.
“They are a very good side, and I hope they continue in the tournament. I have some friends there, especially Stanley Nwabali — we played against each other in South Africa. I’ll be rooting for him.”
