The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a flawless Group C campaign at AFCON 2025 with a final 3–1 victory over Uganda…

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has tipped Nigeria as strong contenders for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title following their flawless run into the Round of 16, Soccernet.ng exclusively reports.

Nigeria sealed qualification with a perfect group-stage record, capping it with a convincing 3–1 victory over Uganda at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

The Super Eagles had earlier beaten Tanzania and Tunisia to finish top of their group with maximum points, which stamps their authority in the tournament.

Reacting to Nigeria’s form, Troost-Ekong praised the team’s steady improvement in this AFCON edition, backing Eric Chelle’s side to go all the way in Morocco.

Troost-Ekong backs Super Eagles for AFCON glory

The former Watford defender, who captained Nigeria at previous AFCON tournaments, expressed his delight at the team’s performances so far and the collective contribution within the squad.

“Great start to the tournament so far. Getting better by the game. And love to see besides the regular performers many players in the squad taking their chances and contributing to the momentum,” Troost-Ekong told Soccernet.ng.

“They are my favourites to win this year.”

The Super Eagles have impressed with their attacking depth so far in the tournament, and it's evident again in the win over Uganda, where Nigeria’s rotated side still dominated large spells.

Nigeria march into Round of 16 with perfect record

Eric Chelle’s men have looked increasingly assured with each outing, scoring freely while maintaining intensity despite early qualification.

Against Uganda, goals from Paul Onuachu and a brace from Raphael Onyedika sealed a comfortable win, extending Nigeria’s winning streak to three matches.

The Super Eagles now turn their attention to the knockout phase, where their opponents are yet to be confirmed, but confidence within the camp remains high.

Troost-Ekong’s endorsement carries added weight, coming just weeks after he announced his retirement from international football shortly before the tournament began.

While no longer on the pitch, the former captain remains firmly behind the team he once led—now believing they have what it takes to lift the AFCON trophy in 2025.
