Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has admitted he was battling injuries leading up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025), according to Soccernet.ng.
Before the tournament began, Nwabali's coach at Chippa United revealed that the Nigerian shot-stopper was dealing with multiple fitness issues. Despite this, the 29-year-old was included in Nigeria's final squad just days later.
While the decision initially raised eyebrows, Nwabali allayed fears regarding his fitness by featuring in a pre-tournament friendly against Egypt. In his AFCON opener, he looked sharp and was nearly faultless despite conceding once.
However, Nwabali came under scrutiny following the match against Tunisia, where he conceded twice from the only two shots on target he faced.
He appeared particularly vulnerable on the first goal, where a costly slip prevented him from making what should have been a routine save.
Reflecting on his performance, Nwabali admitted he had been carrying injuries but credited the proficiency of the Super Eagles' medical team for getting him fit enough to compete.
“I was injured but with the help of team doctors and physios I'm able to stand on the pitch and play,” Nwabali said.
“It's quite tough for me because it's not something you come out to say. But most times what ever thing we see online is true. I'm always strong man, I try to just represent my country.
Nwabali's injury problems are a source of concern for Eric Chelle and the Super Eagles. If injuries are the cause for his recent struggles, Chelle might have to make a decision to bench him.

Simce the start of the year, Stanley Nwabali's performances for the Super Eagles have dropped significantly, and that has attracted criticism from a section of fans.
After the Tunisia, he was once again put under fire, especially for the first goal he conceded. The Chippa United man is seen as rash and careless, and there have been calls for him to be benched.
Unfortunately for him, performances like the one he produced against Tunisia won't help his case.
Nwabali will have to return to his best if he wants to lock down the number one shirt permanently.
